Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)
Prior to the start of your surgical procedure, we will draw a blood sample. This will be done either through the same IV or an additional site. The blood will be placed into a centrifuge and spun while your procedure is being performed. The spinning process separates the blood sample into three main layers: Acellular Plasma, Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF), and Red Blood Cells. Because the PRF layer is rich with fibrin, it forms a yellow jelly consistency after being spun.
The PRF layer has been shown through ongoing research to contain the majority of blood’s growth and healing factors. Some notable factors include: PDGF, TGF-beta, FGF, VEGF, EGF, KGF, and CtGF. The PRF layer has been shown to improve post- operative pain scores, minimize the risk of alveolar osteitis (dry socket), aid in better soft/hard tissue healing, and enhanced bone turnover.
Using PRF is also highly recommended in certain medical conditions that have difficulties with healing or bone turnover. Some of these conditions include, but not limited to, head and neck radiation, chemotherapy, immunosuppressive therapies, medications related to osteonecrosis of the jaws, clotting disorders, blood thinners, poorly controlled diabetes, and smokers.
